History

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary was constituted as per Government order dated 25th August 1984, considering its ecological, faunal, floral and geomorphological    importance.  Originally it was a part of Kulathupuzha   Reserve in Thenmala Range under Thenmala Forest Division .

A separate Shendurney Wildlife Division was formed in 1996 comprising of Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary and Peppara Sanctuary. In 1998, Peppara Sanctuary was carved out and added on to Thiruvananthapuram Wildlife Division leaving only Shendurney Sanctuary in Shendurney Wildlife Division.  The notified area of the sanctuary is 100.32 sq.km.   The map developed through GIS recorded an area of 172.4sq.km. The finding was verified and confirmed at Kerala Forest Research Institute using planimeter. Hence a re-notification has to be issued by the government showing the area of the sanctuary as 171 sq.Km.
